Tidewater Soaring Society is a member owned and operated organization devoted to the enjoyment and challenge of the sport of soaring. The club operates from Garner Gliderport in Orbit, VA weekends year round. Garner Gliderport is owned by the Tidewater Soaring Foundation. Launches are by aero-tow only.
Garner Gliderport features a well-maintained 2600 ft x 400ft grass strip with two hangars. The main hangar is for storage of club-owned sailplanes and towplanes and also houses the club office. The trailer hangar is used for storage of club member privately-owned sailplanes.
TSS owns five sailplanes and two tow planes. The club currently owns two Schweizer 2-33 training gliders, one Blanik L23 dual-place sailplane, one Schweizer 1-26 single-place glider, and one Blanik L33 single-place sailplane. Tow planes include one Piper Pawnee 235 and one Bellanca Citabria. Sailplanes privately owned by club members operate from Garner Gliderport using the club tow planes and, if space is available, private sailplanes may be stored in the club trailer hanger.
Members may receive flight instruction at no additional charge from our club instructors. All club instructors are FAA Certified Flight Instructors. Our fleet is available to all members at very affordable rental rates and tow rates are reasonable. All club members must also be members of the Soaring Society of America.
